The basics

What is alabaster?

Alabaster is a naturally occurring translucent stone, prized for the warm, luminous glow it gives off when backlit. It has been used in luxury interiors for centuries, and today it is cut into thin sheets to create dramatic backlit feature walls, ceilings and partitions.

Because it is genuine quarried stone, every sheet carries its own veining and colour movement — no two are identical. Mounted on a fibreglass backing, the sheets keep the depth and authenticity of solid stone at a fraction of the weight, so they fix to walls, counters and ceilings that could never carry a stone slab.

Answered

Alabaster sheets, common questions

What is alabaster stone?

Alabaster is a naturally occurring translucent stone prized for the warm, luminous glow it gives off when backlit. It has been used for centuries in luxury interiors, and today it is cut into thin sheets for dramatic backlit wall panels, ceilings and partitions.

How much do alabaster sheets cost in India?

Urbane Decor alabaster sheets start from ₹240 per sq ft for standard single-colour onyx, ₹280 for premium multi-colour veined varieties, and ₹450 for rare stone and large-format panels. Trade and project pricing is available for architects and designers.

Can alabaster sheets be backlit?

Yes — this is the whole point of the material. Alabaster is naturally translucent, so an LED panel behind it produces an even, warm, lit-from-within glow. It is the preferred material for backlit feature walls in hotels and high-end homes.

Is alabaster real natural stone?

Yes. Unlike resin or acrylic imitations, alabaster is genuine quarried stone, so every sheet carries its own natural veining and colour variation. No two pieces are identical, which is part of the appeal.

How thick are the sheets and how are they backed?

Standard sheets are 10 to 12mm and mounted on a fibreglass backing that gives them structural strength while keeping them light. We also stock the Luxon Veil line at just 2mm for the most delicate, highly translucent applications.

How is alabaster installed and lit?

Sheets are cut to size on site with standard stone tools and fixed to a frame or substrate. For backlighting we advise on LED spacing and depth so the glow is even, with no visible hotspots or dark bands behind the joints.

Where is alabaster used?

On backlit feature walls, reception and hotel counters, partitions and dividers, ceiling panels, luxury bathroom walls and bar fronts — anywhere a warm, natural glow is the centrepiece of the room.

How many alabaster variants do you stock?

More than 50, from honey onyx and white alabaster to green onyx and multicolour veined patterns, plus the 2mm Luxon Veil line and alabaster resin panels. Browse the catalogues above or request samples.

Do you deliver alabaster across India?

Yes. We supply alabaster stone panels pan-India, including Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad, with samples available before you specify. Call us on 93243 69051 for a custom quote.
