Skin film panels are thin, flexible decorative films, also called PU skin film, soft film or flexible wall film, that are bonded onto a prepared wall or board to create a seamless leather, fabric, stone, wood, matte or metallic surface. Their big advantage is flexibility: they wrap columns, curved walls and rounded furniture edges that rigid panels cannot follow, with few or no visible joints.
What is a skin film panel made of?
"Skin film" describes the flexible decorative surface, not one standard construction, so products vary by manufacturer. Most systems have three parts:
- A protective top layer, usually polyurethane or a similar polymer, that resists everyday stains, moisture and light scratches.
- A decorative, embossed layer that carries the colour and the leather, fabric, stone or wood texture.
- A backing layer that gives the film body and grips the adhesive.
Films are commonly between 1 and 3 mm thick, with deeper textures such as faux stone sitting at the thicker end. In India they are mostly supplied in rolls, often around 1.22 m (4 ft) wide, which lets large walls and tall wardrobe shutters be covered with very few joints. Some products come as sheets or pre-backed panels instead. Always check the manufacturer's data for exact thickness, roll width, backing and recommended adhesive.
Finishes you can choose from
- Leather: the most popular, with real grain and a soft touch. Used on headboards, wardrobe shutters and luxury retail displays.
- Fabric: linen, tweed or silk-like weaves that look upholstered but wipe clean.
- Stone and concrete: travertine, marble or raw concrete looks, far lighter than real stone.
- Wood grain: softer and more matte to the touch than a typical laminate, closer to veneer.
- Matte and metallic: ultra-matte solid colours, or brushed brass, copper and steel effects that bend round curves.
Why skin film works on curves
This is where soft films beat everything else. Standard laminate cracks past a certain bend, and fluted, charcoal or PU stone panels are rigid. A suitable skin film can follow a round column, a curved reception counter or a rounded wardrobe edge, and can wrap a 90-degree corner without edge banding or an aluminium trim.
For tighter or compound curves, installers use gentle heat from a heat gun to soften the film so it moulds to the shape without distorting the texture. Flexibility still has limits: confirm the minimum bending radius for the specific product before you design a tight curve around it.
How skin film is installed
Installation depends on what it goes onto. In every case, the surface underneath decides the result, because a thin film shows every bump, nail head and speck of dust.
Directly on a wall
A painted wall is not enough. The wall must be sound, dry and flat: filled, puttied, sanded smooth, primed to seal the pores and completely dust-free before adhesive goes on. On new plaster, let the wall dry out fully first. Moisture trapped behind the film causes peeling and can encourage mould.
On MDF or HDHMR
Engineered boards make excellent substrates because they are naturally flat. Raw MDF edges soak up glue quickly, so installers should prime the edges before applying the contact adhesive.
Over existing laminate or tiles
Skin film can go over pre-laminated boards if the glossy surface is lightly sanded for grip; do a small trial first. It can also go over tiles, but only after grout lines are filled and levelled with putty or a levelling compound, otherwise every grout line will show through.
What can go wrong, and how to prevent it
- Bubbles: trapped air or dust. Prevent it with thorough sanding, a tack cloth to lift dust and a felt-edged squeegee worked from the centre outwards.
- Lifting edges: too little adhesive on porous edges, adhesive not cured, or a dusty or damp surface. Heat helps relax the film at corners so it does not pull back.
- Opening seams: a simple butt joint on a large wall can open into a hairline gap as temperatures change. Experienced installers use double-cut overlap splicing.
- Damp walls: seepage or rising damp will destroy the bond from behind. Fix the moisture source first; a film is never a waterproofing solution.
- Strong direct sun: prolonged harsh sunlight, for example through an unshaded west-facing window, can fade some finishes or weaken the adhesive. Check UV suitability with the manufacturer.
When not to use skin film
- Exteriors and balconies open to the weather.
- Inside shower areas with running water.
- Heavy-impact commercial corridors where trolleys and luggage hit the walls; rigid panels or hard laminates last longer.
- Any wall with active dampness or seepage.
- Where you need acoustic absorption: at 1 to 3 mm it is too thin to absorb sound.

Many good interiors combine both: rigid panels such as fluted, charcoal or PU stone on flat feature walls, and skin film on the columns, curved elements and furniture around them.
Cleaning and lifespan
Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth and mild soapy water. Avoid abrasive pads, strong solvents and aggressive scrubbing on textured finishes. Fabric-look films are non-porous, so unlike real fabric they do not soak up stains. Lifespan depends on the film, the substrate, the adhesive, the installation and exposure to traffic, sun and moisture, so there is no single figure that applies to every product. If you ever want to remove it, heat softens the adhesive for peeling, but expect to sand and repaint the surface afterwards.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying it over a damp or newly plastered wall that has not dried out.
- Skipping putty, sanding or primer because "the film will hide it". It will not.
- Assuming every film can handle a tight curve. Check the bending radius.
- Using an adhesive the manufacturer has not approved.
- Over-stretching the film, which leads to lifting and distortion.
- Not planning roll direction, joins and pattern matching before cutting.
- Using an interior film outdoors or in a shower.
- Treating the film as a fix for water ingress.
