If you build in Guwahati, Shillong or Aizawl, you already know what the rain does to a wall. Paint blisters, plywood swells, veneer lifts and mould comes back every year. This guide covers which wall finishes last in the North East, which ones to keep away from, and how to get them to your town.
Use PVC in bathrooms and on ground-floor walls, WPC or charcoal in living rooms and bedrooms, and ACP on exposed outer walls. Avoid plywood, MDF and veneer on damp-prone walls. Fix any leak and let the wall dry before anything goes on it, because panels are a finish, not a cure. Prices start at ₹75 per sq ft, material only, before GST.

1. Why walls fail faster in the North East
Few parts of the world take as much rain. The Meghalaya plateau catches the monsoon head on, and the weather office's long-term averages show the scale of it.
Averages quoted by the India Meteorological Department.
Most of the region is not as extreme as Mawsynram, but the pattern is the same. The rain starts early, it lasts for months, and the air stays humid after it stops. That is what ruins walls. Materials that hold moisture never fully dry out between seasons.
- Plywood and MDF take in moisture, swell and come apart at the edges.
- Veneer and wallpaper lift as the glue behind them fails.
- Paint blisters and peels wherever damp is coming through.
- Termites go for wood-based boards, and damp walls suit them well.
2. Deal with the water first
Before you choose a finish, find out whether the wall itself is taking in water. In a hill town the usual causes are rain driving through outside walls, gaps around windows, and damp terraces. On the plains of Assam and Tripura, add rising damp on ground floors.
- Walk the wall in the rain. Note where the damp appears and when it grows.
- Fix the cause. Seal the outside, repair the terrace, or call a plumber. Our seepage guide covers each cause.
- Let it dry. A wall that has been wet needs time, so plan the work for after the monsoon.
- Then finish it. Only now does the panel choice matter.
Never fit panels over a wall that is still wet. Water trapped behind any finish keeps damaging the wall where you cannot see it.
3. Room by room: what to use
These are the choices we suggest for a North East home once the wall is sound.
| Room | Use | Why | From (before GST) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bathroom, wash area | PVC, or UV marble with sealed joints | Fully waterproof, wipes clean | ₹75 / sq ft (PVC) |
| Ground-floor walls | PVC, after any damp is fixed | Nothing to swell or rot | ₹75 / sq ft |
| Living room, TV wall | WPC or charcoal | Warm wood or textured look without plywood | ₹99 / sq ft (WPC) |
| Bedroom | WPC or charcoal | Warm finish that stays flat through the seasons | ₹99 / sq ft (WPC) |
| Kitchen | PVC or UV marble | Wipes clean, handles steam | ₹75 / sq ft (PVC) |
| Shopfront, outer wall | ACP | Made for the outside; WPC is not | ₹75 / sq ft |
PVC panels are the safest choice wherever water is likely. WPC and charcoal panels bring back the warmth that wood gives, without the swelling. For a stone look with far fewer joints, UV marble sheets come 8 by 4 ft at ₹9,999 per sheet.
4. Outer walls take a different product
An outside wall in this climate takes direct rain for months. That is a job for ACP panels, which are made for shopfronts and elevations. We do not recommend WPC on exposed walls here. Keep it indoors or in covered areas such as a deep verandah.
Repair the wall first. Cladding a sound wall adds a weatherproof outer skin, but it will not fix cracks or leaks that are already there.
5. Assam-type houses and timber walls
Many homes in the region use a timber frame with ikra or light walls, because they are light and suit the ground. These walls can take panels, but they need more care than brick. They move with the seasons, and the surface is rarely flat.
Before you order, check that the wall is dry, firm and flat. If it is not, your carpenter may need to prepare it first. Send us a photo and the wall size on WhatsApp, and we will tell you honestly whether panels will work.
6. Hotels, homestays and cafes
Homestays and small hotels in Meghalaya, Sikkim and Arunachal have a short window between seasons. Panels suit that well. They fit dry, so there is no plaster to cure and rooms come back into use quickly. Bathroom walls wipe clean between guests, and a single feature wall behind the bed changes how a room looks in photos.
Light, dry-fit panels also help on hill sites, where getting masons and heavy material up a road takes time. Order about 10 per cent extra for cutting, since a small shortage is slow to fix in a remote town.

Two worked examples, material only and before GST, with 10 per cent added for cutting:
- TV wall, 10 by 9 ft in WPC: 90 sq ft plus 10 per cent is 99 sq ft. At ₹99 per sq ft, that is about ₹9,801.
- Bathroom wall, 7 by 8 ft in entry PVC: 56 sq ft plus 10 per cent is about 62 sq ft. At ₹75 per sq ft, that is about ₹4,650.
Thickness, finish and quantity change the final figure. Trims, adhesive and your carpenter's charges are separate.

Which wall panels are best for homes in the North East?
Use PVC in bathrooms and on ground-floor walls, WPC or charcoal in living rooms and bedrooms, and ACP on exposed outer walls. All four are non-absorbent, so they do not swell the way plywood and MDF do.
Can panels be fixed on an Assam-type house or a timber wall?
Often yes, but the wall has to be dry, firm and flat first. Timber frames and ikra walls move with the seasons, so send us a photo and the wall size before you order and we will tell you what to do.
Do you deliver to Shillong, Imphal, Aizawl, Agartala, Kohima, Itanagar and Gangtok?
Yes, on request. Guwahati normally takes 5 to 6 days. For other North East towns we confirm the transit time with your quote, before you pay.
How much does a TV wall cost in the North East?
A 10 by 9 ft wall is 90 sq ft. Add 10 per cent for cutting and you need about 99 sq ft. In WPC from ₹99 per sq ft, that is about ₹9,801 for panels, material only and before GST.
When is the best time to fit panels in Assam or Meghalaya?
The dry months after the monsoon, roughly November to February, are the safest. Walls have had time to dry, and any leak the rain exposed has shown itself. Fix those leaks first.
Who fits the panels in the North East?
Your local carpenter. We do not have a fitting team in the North East yet. Every order ships with a fitting guide, and we will talk your carpenter through spacing, trims and corners on a call.
